The end of week one

So, I survived my first week in Belize!  It definitely had it's ups and downs, but more ups :-)  We are getting used to the ins and outs of daily life here.  I picked up a sim card at BTL(Belize Telemedia Limited) so now I have a phone.  It's 33 cents a minute during off peak time.  I also learned where the market is, and they have lots of different types of food and miscellaneous items.  I bought 5 tangerines for $1 Belize, which is 50 cents in US.  Not too shabby.  I also purchased some plastic bowls, because our house only had one bowl.  The market is about a 20 minute walk from the house, but I prefer to ride my bike which takes about 5-8 minutes :-)

There is definitely no sense of urgency here.  Any restaurant you go to, your food takes forever to come out, like 45 mins or more.  They also do not bring your drinks before you eat, which is strange, but it kind of makes sense because there are no refills.  I tried fresh watermelon juice the other day and it was super tasty.

I am going to teach my first lesson on Monday about irregular verbs, so I'll let you know how that goes.  It's 12:30AM here now and I'm pretty tired. So, goodnight from Belize :-)

First day of student teaching...

Hello everyone out there reading this.  Thank you for following me on my journey.  Today was the first day of student teaching.  Which is also the first day of my last semester as an undergrad....man, that sounds so wonderful!

So Elena and I are teaching at the same school in Belmopan, Cayo, Belize.  The name of our school is Our Lady Guadalupe Primary School.  They have students from the age of five all the way up to twelve.  I have Standard III which is equivalent to 4th or 5th grade.  There are 28 students in my class; 14 girls and 14 boys.  The students are so sweet and I also love my collaborating teacher.

The school is a twenty minute walk from our house :-( Kedi and Jenna's school is practically in our backyard, so this was a downside, but....  Today I asked my CT if she knew a place I could buy a bike?  She said, "I have a beach cruiser you can borrow while you're here, and my daughter has one that your friend can borrow, I'll just have to ask her first.  I was so thrilled!! We had asked someone else and they said that bikes are around $200-$250 Belizian dollars (which is $100-$125 US).  So this saved me a lot of money and it'll save me lots of time.  My CT came by my house tonight to drop off the bikes, well eh my bike.  So, she said that her daughter wasn't too keen on the idea of lending her bike.  So Elena is SOL for the time being.  My CT said she'll try to convince her daughter to give it up, but we'll see.  So for now, I'm the only one in the house with a bike.  I'm pretty stoked!!

The town is small but very spread out.  There are only 2 restaurants close enough to walk to that don't close before 5PM.  One is a Chinese Restaurant and the other is an ice cream shop, but they also have wings, burgers, burritos, and fries.  Hopefully tomorrow we';; check out the pizza place....they deliver :-)

I plan on taking a lot more pics.  I will take some pics of my school and my classroom tomorrow so you can see everything.  That is all for now, I'm going to try and watch my shows and then head off to bed.  Hopefully the million dogs and the geckos won't keep me up again, lol.

Goodnight from Belize :-)
